Chair, BMA GPs committee (2010 ranking: 8)

An outspoken foil to the more considered Richard Vautrey, Dr Buckman shares Hamish Meldrum’s delicate task of maintaining an authentic voice for GPs while never burning the BMA’s diplomatic bridges with the government. No simple tubthumper, expect Dr Buckman to position the BMA as an advocate for the concerns of patients and the wider NHS.

Over the coming year he will be lobbying hard to ensure that the whole GP profession is involved in the development of clinical commissioning groups, resisting centralised diktats and micromanagement, and fighting to ensure local medical committees retain their key role in local decision making.
