Chief executive, Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust (2010 ranking: 69)

Usurping Sir Robert Naylor as the highest ranked acute trust chief executive, Dr Goodier is head of the informal Shelford Group, which represents the ten most powerful teaching hospitals in England (including Sir Robert’s). As representative of the most prestigious brands in the NHS, when he says some hospitals should not be in the teaching game or that the tariff is at risk of choking the UK’s biomedical research industry you can be sure he will be heard. Being Andrew Lansley’s local hospital trust probably does not hurt either and the secretary of state still pops in to ask questions.
