WORKFORCE: Steve Smith is to stand down as Imperial College Healthcare Trust chief executive.

Professor Smith is to join Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He is currently the founding dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Singapore, a joint venture between Imperial College London and NTU.

His resignation takes effect from 20 September and a replacement has not yet been made.

Professor Smith created one of the UK’s first academic health science centres in 2009 when the trust formed a partnership with Imperial College London.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, which had a £900m income in 2009-10, was formed on October 1 2007 when it merged with Hammersmith Hospitals Trust and St Mary’s Trust, becoming one of the largest trusts in the NHS.

The majority of its services are commissioned by the North West London cluster comprising Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster PCTs.
