WORKFORCE: Professor Sir George Alberti has been appointed as chair of King’s College Hospital FT, effective from 1 December 2011.
Professor Alberti, who is currently one of the trust’s non-executive directors, is internationally recognised for his work in the field of diabetes and was the government’s National Clinical Director for Emergency Access from 2002 to 2009.
He was knighted in 2000 for services to diabetic medicine, and is a member of the World Health Organization’s expert advisory panel on diabetes.
He is also chair of the charity Diabetes UK, a past dean of medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and a former president of the Royal College of Physicians.
Current chair Michael Parker said: “I am delighted that Professor Alberti has been selected as our next chair. As a non-executive director he has already made a significant contribution at board level, and his in-depth knowledge, combined with experience in a number of areas – as chair of Diabetes UK, as well as in the management of serious emergency conditions – will be a huge asset in his new role. ”
Professor Alberti said: “Working with the board as a non-executive director for the last seven months has reinforced my belief that this is a very special hospital and I am looking forward to the opportunity to play a greater part in its future, as well as helping to further develop King’s Health Partners, our Academic Health Sciences Centre.”
