STRUCTURE: A challenge to the commissioning decision which would see the Leeds children’s heart surgery unit closed is due to be heard in the High Court next week.

The challenge to the proposals of a national joint committee of primary care trusts has been brought by campaign group Save Our Surgery. It disputes the legality of the JCPCT’s proposals for reconfiguration of paediatric cardiac surgery.

The campaign group has claimed the process has involved a lack of transparency, problems with the committee’s quality assessment, and errors in assessment scoring.

The proposals are also the subject of an ongoing review by the Independent Reconfiguration Panel.

The JCPCT argue the changes will make children’s heart surgery much safer by centralising it.
