Consultation plans on the future shape of accident and emergency services in north west London will be outlined this summer, with around three departments likely to close as a result.

The move is being driven by attempts to improve quality and make hospitals in the area financially sustainable, but like most reconfigurations is set to be politically contentious.

The NHS North West London cluster will set out a series of consultation options for a major acute reconfiguration in June with implementation set to begin in December.

In-depth analysis by HSJ suggests the process is likely to see a reduction from the current eight full A&E units to five.

It is the second of HSJ’s new Local Briefings, a new weekly series of in-depth reports on the key issues facing the NHS’s major health economies.
