COMMERCIAL: Support services contractor Capita is installing a £3.4m integrated information technology system for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

The first phase of the project has been completed. The aim is to equip the trust’s new £226m PFI hospital in Pembury with an IT system enabling more care to be delivered at the bedside.

The wireless infrastructure will enable consultants to access clinical applications such as the Picture Archiving and Communications System images including X-rays and MRI scans via wireless devices.

The deal also includes security systems, patient in-room entertainment, digital signage. Capita will provide maintenance and support for three years.

The first patients moved into the 512-bed hospital in January and the facility is expected to be fully operational by autumn 2011. It replaces the old Pembury Hospital and Kent and Sussex Hospital, and is believed to be the first in the UK in which every patient has their own room with an en-suite toilet.
