STRUCTURE: A new neuroscience unit has opened at Medway Maritime Hospital.

The unit consolidates all of Medway NHS Foundation Trust’s neurosciences services in one dedicated space.

The service aims to reduce waiting times for diagnostics and treatments and to prevent patients from north and west Kent having to travel to London by offering more treatment options on site.

For example, its computer system is linked to King’s College Hospital in London giving patients access to London consultants without the need to travel. Some tests and treatments currently undertaken in other places will also be offered locally.

The unit has been named after Dr George Harwood, consultant neurologist, who had worked in Medway for over 20 years and trained many of the neurologists in south east England.

The new unit, which began receiving patients this month, will be formally opened at a ceremony on 5 August.
