STRUCTURE: The Staffordshire primary care trust has announced it is to launch a public consultation on the future of Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust in May.

In a press relase the primary care trust said the consultation would focus on a “possible new service model” which will include urgent and emergency care, long term conditions and surgical services. The release recognised it was the “clear ambition” of the local health system to retain a 24 hour accident and emergency service.

The A&E at Stafford Hospital has been closed overnight since December.

The press release follows calls from the Stafford and Surrounds and Cannock Chase clinical commissioning groups for just four specialities to be provided across the trust’s two sites.

In a letter to cluster chief executive Graham Irwin, they said they would find it impossible to support more than just urgent care, outpatients, diagnostics and a midwife led maternity unit without a convinving plan for the trust’s future financial viability.
