STRUCTURE: A new orthopaedic unit has opened which will help make Pontefract Hospital a centre for planned orthopaedic surgery.
The unit has dedicated beds and theatres for elective patients and will enable the trust to focus emergency and more complex surgery at Pinderfields Hospital.
The unit was formally opened by MP Yvette Cooper.
Carole Langrick, Chief Operating Officer for The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The facility means that not only can we focus emergency surgery at Pinderfields Hospital, but also ensures there is a much lower chance of patients having planned operations cancelled to make way for emergency care patients.
“Along with the new facilities, the trust has also invested more in staff, including advanced nurse practitioners, who are highly qualified nurses best placed for this type of care.”
