Islington primary care trust has created a post of deputy chief executive, which will be filled by the PCT’s current chief operating officer Helen Pettersen.
The creation of the deputy role follows the promotion of the PCT’s chief executive Rachel Tyndall to the role of chief executive for the north central London sector area.
Ms Tyndall will perform that role alongside her Islington-specific responsibilities.
The changes in management structure reflect attempts by London PCTs to commission collaboratively across the capital. London still has 31 PCTs as it was not affected by the reconfigurations in 2006.
This has led to criticisms that its commissioners are unable to build the necessary purchasing or negotiating power with the capital’s acute providers – a problem the PCTs aim to overcome through more joint commissioning.
