Health secretary Andrew Lansley has set out his priorities for the NHS.

He is understood to have told Department of Health directors that his first priority was to establish “an autonomous NHS” driven by quality indicators, outcome measures, and sharing best practice.

He said his other two priorities were to focus on public health and to tackle the long term care issue.

Mr Lansley visited Richmond House, the DH headquarters in Whitehall, today on his first day as health secretary.
