Jeremy Hunt has been reappointed health secretary in the new government.

Prime minister David Cameron is completing his cabinet following the general election this afternoon. Jeremy Hunt has been made health secretary.

Mr Hunt told HSJ in November that he wanted to be health secretary until 2017, claiming he “would be very happy if this is my life’s work”. He has been in the post since autumn 2012.

Alistair Burt has also today been named as the new minister of state at the Department of Health, the post held before the general election by Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb.

Mr Burt was a junior minister at the foreign and commonwealth office from 2010-13, but since then he has not been in government. He was a minister for several years during the 1990s at the Department of Social Security.

Updated 5.11pm: Updated to reflect the confirmation by government of Mr Hunt’s appointment, and the appointment of Alistair Burt.
