The Royal Society has urged the NHS not to overlook potential of everyday technologies such as mobile phones and personal digital devices in favour of large-scale IT projects.
Its Digital Healthcarereport says the NHS has been slow to adopt such technologies, but will need to make creative use of them if it is to cope with long-term pressures, such as the ageing population and a shortage of skilled staff.
It says common technologies could cut paperwork, give staff access to information and allow more patients to be treated and monitored at home.
