The Nuffield Trust has announced that Nigel Edwards will take on the role of chief executive from April.

Mr Edwards is a senior fellow at the King’s Fund and a director with the global health and life sciences centre of excellence at KPMG.

He is currently advising the World Health Organization regional office for Europe on developing a strategy for hospital and healthcare delivery systems.

Among his previous roles, Mr Edwards was policy director of the NHS Confederation and director of the London health economics consortium at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he remains an honorary visiting professor.

Nuffield Trust chairman Dame Carol Black said: “Nigel has a wealth of experience in health and social care and will bring substantial expertise and knowledge to the Nuffield Trust. We are delighted to have him on board. We believe his knowledge, ideas and passion will enable the Nuffield Trust to continue to play an important role as a leading independent source of evidence-based research and analysis.”

Mr Edwards said: “I am very excited to be joining the Nuffield Trust and I am looking forward to building on its very strong reputation for analysis and research.

“The current situation in health and social care means there has never been a time when incisive and forward looking policy analysis has been more necessary.”

Andy McKeon will continue in his role as acting chief executive in the interim period.
