STRUCTURE: A new Emergency Surgical Assessment Unit will open at the Cumberland Infirmary, part of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust.

All surgical emergencies that come in for admission, either via the A&E department or through direct GP admissions, will be admitted to the ESAU where patients will be assessed and a care pathway will be put in place.

Richard Heaton, Head of Nursing for Emergency Surgery and Elective Care said: “We have been working to further enhance the surgical pathway for both emergency and elective patients and are pleased to announce the opening of the Emergency Surgical Assessment Unit on Saturday.

“Patients will receive a rapid assessment and treatment plan in the 24-hour unit which has up to 15 beds. We can then map out a clear treatment plan for them and ensure they receive the specialist surgical care they need in the unit.”
