FINANCE: The North Essex primary care trust cluster has been set a £6m running cost reduction target for this year, according to board papers.

A finance report to the September board meeting of the North Essex cluster - which includes West Essex, Mid Essex and North East Essex PCTs - set out the target.

The report said: “In line with the government’s commitment to significantly reduce NHS running costs, the SHA have set the PCTs target reductions in costs of £5.9m in 2011-12.”

This means a 12 per cent reduction of £2m for North East Essex, a 14.5 per cent reduction of £2.1m for Mid Essex and a 15 per cent reduction of £1.9m for West Essex.

The report added: “Directors are currently consulting with staff on proposed structures for enabling the PCTs to continue to meet their operational responsibilities as well as deliver the running cost savings.

“Given the timescales required for consultation and implementation, the new structures will not be in place until towards the end of the financial year.”
