Seven clinical commissioning groups across London are considering appointing a single accountable officer, HSJ has learned.

According to two sources with knowledge of the plans, the commissioners are looking at proposals for a single lead across all the CCGs in the North East London sustainability and transformation partnership footprint.

One source said the proposal is set to be considered by the boards of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, City and Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest CCGs in July or August.

It is not clear what the implications will be for the CCGs’ current accountable officers if the plans are approved.

Havering and Barking and Dangenham CCGs already have a single accountable officer and share a management team with Redbridge CCG.

The news emerges following the appointment of a single accountable officer across five CCGs in North Central London earlier this year and the appointment of a single lead for four South West London CCGs in December.

The plans also reflect a wider trend across the country – there are more than 60 areas where CCGs are set to merge or share leadership arrangements.
