STRUCTURE: A clinical commissioning group is looking to reopen a minor injuries unit at weekends – just a few months after the local PCT closed it to save money.

Malton MIU is currently only open during weekdays after NHS North Yorkshire and York introduced weekend and evening closures in December.

But Scarborough and Ryedale CCG is now examining reopening it during the day at weekends when it says there was particular concern about its closure. Evening use of the MIU was light, with only about six patients a day using it after 6pm, and there are no plans to reopen it then. The CCG says there is no increase in A&E and ambulance use due to the reduced hours.

The closure was expected to save £100,000 over a four month period but the CCG is suggesting savings can be made in other ways, such as adjusting the staff skill mix with GPs concentrating on the morning hours and specialist nurses the afternoon.

Simon Cox, accountable officer for the CCG, said: “We feel this proposal responds to the concerns raised by local residents whilst still helping our CCG to make essential cost savings.

“The feedback from patients has largely focussed on the closure of the MIU at weekends. Coupled with our evidence that the MIU is well used during the day at weekends, we feel it is important that we look at ways to reinstate the service at these times.”
