STRUCTURE: Burns patients at Scunthorpe General Hospital are able to get an expert opinion on their treatment from elsewhere in the country thanks to a telemedicine link.

The new service has meant that only patients who need to be treated by specialist burns teams have to travel while others can be seen and treated in Scunthorpe. Previously patients with deep burns would have had to transfer to another hospital for assessment.

The pilot service in the hospital’s A&E unit uses video conferencing  to allow high definition images to be seen by specialists in Sheffield and Wakefield whose input can guide treatment delivered locally. The service runs from 9 to 5 on weekdays.
