WORKFORCE: Northumbria Healthcare Foundation Trust has appointed a consultant intensivist and a consultant anaesthetist, which it says is part of preparations for its planned new specialist emergency hospital.

Dr Elizabeth Hall and Dr Rob Whittle have been appointed as consultant intensivist and anaesthetist respectively, and will work at the trust’s North Tyneside and Wansbeck general hospitals.

A statement says: “The specialists form a key part of the trust’s development of its critical care team in preparation for the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital which will care for the most seriously ill or injured patients in Northumberland and North Tyneside.

“Work has started on the state-of-the-art hospital in Cramlington which will be staffed by highly-trained and experienced medical professionals representing all the main clinical specialities…

“It will be the first hospital of its kind in the country to have emergency care consultants on hand 24 hours a day, every day.”
