KPMG has confirmed the appointment of Mark Britnell as its new head of Healthcare Europe, as exclusively revealed by HSJ last month.

The former director general for commissioning and system management at the Department of Health will join KPMG as a partner. He will officially start in his new role on 1 October 2009.

Mr Britnell has been the leading reformer in the NHS management team. He launched the world class commissioning drive, and has always been a staunch advocate of private sector involvement in the NHS.

He recently established the co-operation and competition panel to ensure fair access to the healthcare market.

In his new role, Mr Britnell will report to Ashley Steel, KPMG’s head of infrastructure, government and healthcare and member of the Europe board.

She said: “We are delighted to have Mark on board. He brings with him an enormous depth of experience in healthcare and administration - both in the UK and internationally. This is an important new appointment for KPMG and will enable us to better support the NHS and other health organisations globally in their programmes for improving health sector efficiency.”
