PERFORMANCE: Poole Hospital Foundation Trust was forced to close its maternity unit to new admissions for 27 hours on 15 and 16 August.

In his report to September’s board chief executive, Chris Bown said the closure was required due to “a number of factors associated with a high level of activity and complexity that led to all antenatal and postnatal beds being fully utilised during that period”.

He continued: “The staff managed this challenging period well and during the period only one woman who required an antenatal bed had to be diverted to Salisbury and three women were delivered at home by the community midwives.”

A full investigation of the circumstances has been undertaken.
