• RCGP appoints 29 GP forward view ambassadors
  • College says it has been told there is a lack of GP voices withing some STPs
  • NHS England: ”Half of the footprint areas are being led by GP controlled CCGs”

Twenty-nine GPs have been appointed to act as local ambassador’s for the General Practive Forward View.

The amabassadors, recruited by the Royal College of GPs, will cover the 44 sustainability and transformation plan patches in England and will aim to provide a GP voice within the STP proccess.

The ambassadors will also be asked to track developments related to promises within the GP forward view. The document was launched by NHS England in April, setting out how it intends to transform general practice over the next five years.

Gary Howsam, a regional ambassador for three areas and a GP partner in Cambridgeshire, said: “These STP boards are going to be key in making the decisions about what is going on in the NHS at a local level. It is absolutely critical that we get the voice of GP providers into the room, so when they’re at the planning stage that voice gets heard strongly.

“I think the STP is the way the money that has been promised in the GP forward view is likely to materialise down at practice level.

“Anecdotally we’ve heard that there is not a GP voice at all present within some of the rooms where the STPs are being drawn up and the college is hoping to influence the evolution and second iteration of the plans and just give that perspective from a GP provider point of view, not just a CCG view, and [we] get the impression that the STPs are doing that at the moment.”

A spokesman for NHS England said: “Footprint areas have determined their own governance arrangements as locally appropriate.

While it is not possible to ensure representation from every provider and commissioner on their patch, we have encouraged them to ensure a wide range of voices is heard including those of frontline GPs. Half of the footprint areas are being led by GP controlled CCGs.”
