The Care Quality Commission has appointed a new deputy chief inspector of hospitals.

In the autumn, Dr Nigel Acheson moves into the post created by Professor Ted Baker taking on the job of chief inspector of hospitals.

He is currently NHS England’s regional director and higher level responsible officer for the south.

Professor Baker said: “He brings to CQC a wealth of experience and a track record of professional and clinical leadership.

“In his previous roles, Nigel has been a consistent champion of clinical safety and quality and will make a significant contribution to CQC’s work in these areas.”

Dr Acheson trained in Birmingham and has worked as a consultant gynaecological oncologist since 2002, helping develop the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital’s gynaecological cancer centre.
