STRUCTURE: The foundation trust says it is planning to rebuild six operating theatres and supporting structures, which will help guarantee an “independent future for the hospital”.

The trust said the cost of maintaining its “ageing” buildings was high and “there is a risk that electrical and plumbing problems could seriously disrupt work in our theatres in the coming years”.

Previous building plans became unaffordable due to the recession, leading the trust’s board to consider merging with another NHS trust that could fund the work.

However, “thanks to the hard work of staff over the last 18 months”, the trust said its mid-year financial position is “stronger than forecast”.

The trust said: “If this improved efficiency can be maintained and further improved in the coming years, the board of directors is confident that QVH can afford, on its own, to take out and repay a loan to make the necessary investment possible.”

It is hoped that work will begin on the new theatres later this year.
