PERFORMANCE: Queen Victoria Hospital FT has failed to match its infection control targets for 2010-11 and faces tougher ones next year.
The trust had a yearly target of one MRSA case and four cases of Clostridium difficile for 2010-11.
Its latest report for quarter four of last year shows the trust had reported two cases of MRSA bacteraemia for the year-to-date and six cases of C. difficile.
Both MRSA cases were in “complex” patients but were not connected. The report said: “They were reported as serious untoward incidents which is the usual procedure for MRSA cases. A Root Cause Analysis was undertaken for both cases.”
One of the five cases of clostridium difficile was identified in the fourth quarter. The report said: “This was a one off case in a patient on appropriate antibiotics for a significant infection.”
Despite the failure to meet last year’s target, the report noted: “The 2011-12 maximum allowable limits have been set at one MRSA and five C.difficile.”
