A new chief executive for Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust has been appointed.

Steve McManus will take up his post at the £373m turnover organisation in three months’ time, replacing Jean O’Callaghan, who has been in the post for two years.

Mr McManus comes to the job from a hospital director role with Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Foundation Trust and was previously chief operating officer at  Imperial College Healthcare Trust.

In August, an independent chair was appointed to the Berkshire West accountable care system – a partnership between the Royal Berkshire, Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and the four local CCGs.

HSJ reported that the chair would ensure the parties involved were held “mutually to account”.

Cathy Winfield, chief officer for the Berkshire West CCGs federation, said all parties involved in the ACS are “voluntarily” agreeing to work together and will remain separate statutory entities.

She added that the independent chair’s role was “very much a facilitation role [to] find a middle course” if disagreements arise but they did not have the power to mandate cooperation between the CCGs or trusts.
