STRUCTURE: The acute trust reported that it had complained to the strategic health authority NHS South Central about the designation of level three Neonatal Intensive Care Unit services, which would see it lose patients to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The minutes to Royal berkshire’s March meeting, the most recent available, said the situation “was indicating a loss of patients and mothers from the trust to the John Radcliffe, which was not supported by local clinicians or, it was understood, commissioners”.

the minutes add: “The chief executive commented that the indications were that commissioners expected the trust and the John Radcliffe to identify a solution. It was considered appropriate for the chairman and chief executive to express the concerns of the trust at SHA level.”
