FINANCE: The Royal Berkshire FT will pay nearly £8m in compensation to a ten-year-old with cerebral palsy after mistakes during his birth.

A delay during delivery led to avoidable deprivation of oxygen and sustain a severe hypoxic ischaemic brain injury.

The Royal Berkshire NHS Trust will make a lump sum payment of £3.66 million, in addition to annual payments of £140,000 to age 19 and £225,000 from age 19 for the rest of his life. The compensation will cover 24 hour care, equipment, therapies, accommodation and hydrotherapy.

A spokesman for the trust said: “We are pleased that a settlement has been agreed in this sad case. The events took place a number of years ago and the Trust admitted liability at an early stage in the legal process. At the time lessons were learned and any changes necessary in our procedures were implemented.

The Trust hopes the award will help ensure a good quality of life for him and his family; and would like to take this opportunity to wish the claimant and his family well.”
