STRUCTURE: The health seceretary has backed Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust’s bid for foundation trust status.

In a letter to staff, trust chief executive Lezli Boswell and chair Martin Watts said: “Getting to the third and final stage of the NHS Foundation Trust authorisation process is a major achievement and recognition of the significant progress we have made in recent months.”

The application will now go to Monitor for consideration.

The trust has a historic debt of about £21m due for repayment this financial year but the DH has agreed to restructure it over 15 years if the trust passes Monitor’s authorisation process.
