STRUCTURE: Building work is due to start soon on a new Papworth Hospital to provide specialist treatment for heart and lung patients from across the UK on a seven acre site.

The 310 bed hospital, which will also have 46 beds in a critical care area, seven theatres and five catheter laboratories, should be open in 2018.

Costings have now been finalised, allowing the project on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to go ahead.

Papworth Hospital chief executive Stephen Bridge said: “It has been a long and stimulating process to get to where we are today and this would not have been possible without the support of our staff, who have worked tirelessly to provide the very highest standards of care our patients are accustomed to throughout the process.”
