- Richard Beeken appointed as permanent chief for Sandwell and West Birmingham Trust
- Replaces Toby Lewis, and officially vacates role at Walsall Healthcare Trust
An acute trust in the Midlands has made its interim chief executive a permanent appointment.
Richard Beeken has been in interim charge of Sandwell and West Birmingham Trust as part of a secondment arrangement since February, and has now been appointed permanently by chair Sir David Nicholson.
Sir David said in a statement: “We have an exciting future ahead as we prepare for opening our new acute facility, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, plus working with partners to improve care for our patients and population, and supporting our staff through recovery and restoration of services.”
The trust’s former CEO, Toby Lewis, was recently appointed to a role at the Nuffield Trust think tank after being on sick leave since May 2020.
Since March last year the trust has also appointed a new chief people officer, acting chief nurse and chief operating officer.
Between the start of Mr Lewis’ absence and Mr Beeken taking interim charge, medical director Dr David Carruthers led the trust on a temporary basis.
Mr Beeken’s permanent appointment means he will officially leave Walsall Healthcare Trust, the leadership of which has recently been taken over by Steve Field and David Loughton, the chair and chief executive of Royal Wolverhampton Trust. The pair now lead both providers.
