FINANCE: Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust’s income was dented by lower than expected elective activity during the winter, according to its main commissioner.

NHS Sheffield said there had been “a significant reduction in the level of elective activity [at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust] as a result of disruption caused by the adverse weather in early December”.

The primary care trust said there was increased emergency activity but, because of the 30 per cent marginal tariff, it had reduced its projected spending with the foundation trust during the period.

The PCT still has to make significant savings in-year to break even, however.
