Spending on public sector social care services for adults and children rose by 10 per cent over the past two years to reach £19.3bn in 2005-06, according to the Information Centre for health and social care.

Spending on services for adults and older people, which accounts for 74 per cent of the total social care expenditure, has risen by 5 per cent over the past year. The number of adults and older people receiving services rose by 2 per cent in 2005-06 to 1.7 million.
