PERFORMANCE: Work on the refurbishment of Somerset Partnership Foundation Trust’s Rydon ward is due to start this month.

The ward provides inpatient assessment and treatment for adults. The Care Quality Commission raised moderate concerns following an inspection visit in October 2010.

The regulator said the Rydon ward was not meeting essential standard four that “people should get safe and appropriate care that meets their needs and supports their rights”.

The inspection was triggered by four serious incidents between May and July 2010, which resulted in the death of three people using the service.

The trust had already secured funding for the refurbishment from the Department of Health before the incidents, but it is hoped the plans to provide two, 15-bedded wards will help address concerns around the safety and suitably of the premises.
