WORKFORCE: The South Essex primary care trust cluster has brought in extra nursing and administrative resource to deal with a continuing healthcare (CHC) overspend.

A quality, innovation, productivity and prevention (QIPP) update submitted to the NHS South East Essex board said CHC as overspent by £4.2m across the two PCTs in the first two months of the 2011-12 financial year.

It said to tackle a “backlog of reviews” for CHC, “additional nurse resource” and “additional admin support” has been provided to “chase up provider reports and enable clinical staff to focus on areas of priority re reviewing eligibility”.

The report did not explain whether the additional staff were agency workers or members of its permanent workforce drafted in from other duties or working bank shifts.
