PERFORMANCE: South Tees Hospitals Foundation Trust will become the first site in the world to use a new model of linear accelerators from April.

The new equipment is part of a £35m investment in oncology services being made by the trust which will come close to doubling its capacity for delivering treatments by 2016-17.

‘The technology offers the benefit of quicker treatment times, improved planning, low transmission of radiotherapy which means that more advanced techniques can be used without any detriment to the patient,’ said director of planning Jill Moulton in a report to the board.

The investment had to be made when the level of any radiotherapy tariff was undone but the indicative tariff makes the project look sustainable, she said.
