STRUCTURE: A new service is being piloted in East Surrey to identify people who are either drinking at levels which pose a risk to their health or have already developed an alcohol dependency.

In November the trust began screening people attending A&E at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill for drinking problems to enable more people to access services they need and reduce the rate of alcohol-related hospital admissions.

The pilot will run for a year and has been made possible thanks to new investment from Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs East Surrey Hospital, and NHS East Sussex, which purchases local NHS services.

There may be plans to make the post permanent, and make similar services available in other services in Surrey.
