WORKFORCE: Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Trust plans to make mouth care training mandatory as part of its certified training for all nurses.
This follows criticism from Care Quality Commission inspectors last year that many patients had dry mouths and that oral health assessments were not part of nurses’ record keeping.
The mouth care training will be rolled out across the trust from May.
“There is evidence that poor oral health can lead to a deterioration in general health and lengthen hospital stays for patients,” a report in trust board papers for March said.
