Nearly half of the £90m Safer Hospitals, Safer Wards technology funding originally earmarked to be spent this year will be rolled over into 2014-15, NHS England has said.
NHS England head of technology strategy Paul Rice said £50m of the £90m set aside for 2013-14 had been shared out to approximately 225 projects and would be spent by the end of the current financial year.
“Those organisations that need to spend money in 2013-14 and made the [matched financial] commitment following their Memorandums of Understanding being signed will all have been able to draw down their money by tomorrow,” he said last week.
Speaking at the HC2014 Healthcare IT conference in Manchester, Mr Rice confirmed to HSJ that none of the remaining £40m would be returning to the Treasury as the unspent funds would be rolled over into next year.
This would allow those who failed in their initial bids for funding of projects such as digital care records or E-prescribing to re-apply following feedback from NHS England.
He added: “Those who applied from the first tranche who were unsuccessful first time around can have their value for money cases reassessed and will be able to draw down on cash to be spent from April.”
