Tim Orchard, a consultant gastroenterologist at the trust as well as its chief executive, was joined by his chief nurse information officer colleague James Bird and by Elsevier’s vice president for health informatics Robert Nieves for the webinar.

In a debate that took place at 4.30pm on Wednesday 21 October, chaired by HSJ contributor Claire Read and run in association with Elsevier, they discussed whether digital technology might be able to help clinicians make safer, more efficient decisions.

As the complexity of health needs increases – not least due to the pandemic – the challenge and importance of making the right decision at the right time becomes more significant. Those decisions ultimately determine a patient’s experience, the safety and consistency of care, and the efficiency with which healthcare organisations operate.

The panel explored whether digital innovation might help clinicians get the right information at the right time and, if it can, what that means for the way in which clinicians are trained.
