Ipswich Hospital Trust has paid “more than £5m” in compensation to a seven-year-old boy who was left severely disabled after the hospital was judged to have mismanaged his birth.

Joseph Rea, born at Ipswich Hospital in September 2006, was on a ventilator for the first three days of his life and now has cerebral palsy, seizures, mobility problems and learning difficulties.

Mr Justice Tugendhat at London’s High Court approved the compensation which he said would support Joseph for the rest of his life.

It involves a lump sum of £2.4m and further payments every year.

A statement by IBB Solicitors said the total sum was “more than £5m”.

Paul Rees QC, who represented the trust, praised the family’s “devotion, care and commitment” and unreservedly apologised to the family on behalf of the trust.

The trust admitted responsibility in 2009 and has already paid money to buy the family a suitable home.
