2 April 1948, Public Assistance Journal and Health and Hospital Review

Appointments of deputy medical officer of health and deputy medial school officer, senior medial officer, chief dental surgeon, chief nursing officer, principal assistants and divisional medical officers have been made within the London County Council Public Heath Department, as reorganised to take on duties under the National Health Service Act, 1946.

The chief nursing officer will be responsible for the work of upwards of 3000 nurses, midwives, health visitors and domestic staff. The co-ordination of the school nursing, home nursing, midwifery and health visiting services, as well as that of the home helps, will require an officer possessing wide knowledge and experience and administrative ability of a high order. Moreover, it is most desirable, particularly during the early stages, that the head of nursing service should possess those personal qualities which will enable her to deal successfully with the difficulties inseparable from a new service entailing reorganisation and readjustments and necessarily affecting very many persons.
