PERFORMANCE: South Devon Healthcare Foundation Trust ended almost two years without a case or MRSA when a patient contracted the superbug last month.

A report to May’s board meeting said there had not been a case of MRSA at the trust for 690 days when “sadly” a patient contracted it on 24 April.

The trust exceeded the target of 21 cases of Clostridium difficile during 2011-12 by three cases however, Monitor “agreed no escalation is required”.

Minutes from the previous meeting said Monitor would be using the trust as an example in its discussions with the Department of Health around changing the target to make it fair for all organisations, whatever their baseline of clostridium difficile incidences.
