STRUCTURE: Lincoln County Hospital expects to double the amount of day surgery it handles with the launch of a new unit.

Managers say the unit, which is expected to open this summer, will help reduce waiting times and maximise the use of theatre time.

The unit will be located in the hospital’s maternity building and includes two new operating theatres, freeing up the hospital’s main theatres for other emergency and planned work.

The move is part of United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust’s “transformation programme” which is designed to improve services and boost efficiency.

At the moment day surgery cases are treated in theatres across the hospital, said Heather Carter, associate director of transformation.

“Lincoln County Hospital currently sees about 350 day case patients each month and this figure could be more than doubled when we have the dedicated surgical day unit in place,” she said.

About £1m will be spent on the scheme, which also includes moving a women’s ward and building a second obstetric theatre.
