CLINICAL RESEARCH: University Hospitals Bristol Foundation Trust has received almost £3m income from the National Institute for Health Research through involving patients in clinical trials.

A report to the board said between April and January 2012-2013 4,264 patients were recruited into trials, generating £2.7m of income. However, the report said this was below 2010-11 levels so below target for the year, although recruitment number had been impacted by the Christmas and new year period.

It said: “The level of NIHR income remains below the target level for the year, although this is thought to reflect the lag in reporting year to date and the highly variable nature of monthly income levels, rather than income reducing over time. The number of patients recruited into NIHR trials also remains “red” rated for the same reasons.”
