- Royal Papworth chief executive appointed to lead University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.
- UHDB chair Kathy McLean says Stephen Posey has “strong record” for delivery quality
The chief executive of an ‘outstanding’ specialist hospital has been appointed to lead a large general acute trust in the Midlands.
Stephen Posey, currently chief executive of the Royal Papworth Hospital Foundation Trust in Cambridge, will move to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton in September.
Mr Posey has led Royal Papworth – one of the world’s leading cardiothoracic hospitals and the UK’s main heart and lung transplant centre – for the last five years and was previously deputy chief executive at East and North Hertfordshire Trust.
He will replace Gavin Boyle, who led UHDB for six years and left in December to become chief executive of South Yorkshire Integrated Care System.
During Mr Posey’s time at Royal Papworth the trust was the first in the country to receive an ‘outstanding’ rating across all inspection domains. Mr Posey was also named one of HSJ’s top 50 chief executives for 2022.
Kathy McLean, UHDB chair, said: “Stephen’s experience and expertise will help us build on our successes as a trust to date and support the delivery of our strategy to provide exceptional care together and the best outcomes for patients.
“Stephen has a strong track record on delivering both great quality and performance alongside excellent ties with research and academic institutions, something we as a university teaching hospital are continuing to work towards.”
Mr Posey said of his appointment: “It is a real privilege to be joining UHDB as chief executive. The trust and its talented, dedicated staff and volunteers serve a vast community and I am very much looking forward to working alongside them and our partners to help deliver the best possible care to our patients.”
Magnus Harrison, UHDB executive medical director and deputy chief executive, will continue as interim CEO until Mr Posey joins the trust.
