WORKFORCE: Professor Mike Morgan, consultant respiratory physician at University Hospitals of Leicester Trust has been appointed as the National Clinical Director for Respiratory Services for NHS England.
The new NHS England NCD appointments will see practising clinicians provide expert advice and research to the national medical directorate on conditions and services ranging from obesity and diabetes to emergency preparedness and critical care.
Professor Morgan has been involved in the assessment and management of respiratory disability particularly in COPD throughout his career. He is also a Vice President of the British Lung Foundation, the editor of Chronic Respiratory Disease and previously, Chairman of the Asthma UK research committee and has recently demitted as Chairman of the Executive of the British Thoracic Society.
He said: “This is a new ambitious direction for the NHS with its focus on improved quality of service and better outcomes for patients.”
The national clinical directors will continue to work in their current roles, and remain based in their current areas, beginning the new roles in April 2013. There will be a total of 25 NCD posts altogether, recruitment to the remaining four is ongoing.
