PERFORMANCE: University Hospitals of Leicester has received the highest number of complaints of all trusts in the East Midlands.
The trust had 1,725 formal complaints in 2011-12, 850 more than Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, the next highest in the region, according to the data from the NHS Information Centre.
But the trust said it was possible the number was inflated by it accepting complaints going back over many years, when most hospitals only accepted those made within the past year.
Trust director of safety and risk Moira Durbridge said: “We treat 1.1 million patients per year and last year we received 1,725 complaints, which is less than three complaints for every 1,000 patients we care for.
“In the last year we have introduced a series of small but significant steps which we think will improve our performance on some of the issues which we know cause people to complain.
“These include reducing the number of ward moves a patient experiences, increased staffing levels on medical wards and the introduction of discharge co-ordinators, a team of staff who work to improve the quality of patients discharge home and ensure better communication with relatives.”
